Sterling silver is easy to care for if you follow a few simple steps, so don’t be afraid to cover yourself in silver! Tarnishing is a natural process caused by oxidation and moisture from the air and believe it or not sunshine. It first appears as a golden hue on your sterling silver then quickly turns to black. Don’t worry tarnish does not damage silver. To polish your sterling jewelry, gently rub tarnished pieces with a treated polishing cloth (which can be purchased at local jewelry stores and department stores). Don’t use these cloths on 24kt gold, pearls, ivory, opals, corals, lapis, malachite or other soft porous stones. I usually recommend cleaning all your handcrafted jewelry with warm soapy water and a soft brush. A mild liquid detergent and an old toothbrush are ideal. Allow pieces to dry completely before storing. To keep tarnish to a minimum, it is advised that you store your jewelry pieces when not wearing them. Also, when storing remember that exposing it to air promotes tarnishing, so use air tight plastic bags made of Mylar or polyethylene. NEVER USE POLYVINYL PLASTIC BAGS! If this isn’t possible, store your jewelry in a velvet-lined jewelry box away from other metals, such as pennies or other hard items. Avoid storing your sterling silver jewelry on wood surfaces, because wood usually contains acids that can mar the finish. Oak seems to be the worst for this. Keep pearl jewelry separated from other jewelry pieces. Pearls are soft and can easily be scratched. Please be gentle with your handcrafted jewelry. Avoid bending sterling silver wire, this may cause breakage and ruin the integrity of your piece. You should avoid wearing your jewelry while sleeping, playing sports, swimming, or housecleaning. Do not wear jewelry where it may come in contact with abrasive soaps. By following these tips, you will wear your jewelry for many years to come.
